Common Reasons You Have a Leaking Dishwasher

A dishwasher is very helpful and you don’t appreciate how convenient it is until something goes wrong. Especially during winters if something goes wrong then you will have to wash all the dishes by hand. If your dishwasher suddenly starts leaking water you will wind up having to clean puddles of water from underneath it. You don’t always have to replace your dishwasher if something goes wrong. There can be many different reasons and solutions for them. Here are the common reasons you have a leaking dishwasher.

Clogged Dishwasher Filter

One of the reasons why your dishwasher suddenly started leaking is because the dishwasher filter is clogged. If the filter is not regularly cleaned foreign objects will slowly settle in preventing your dishes from being cleaned properly. If you notice that the dishwasher is not cleaning as well as it used to that means your filter needs changing. After all the filter is responsible for trapping all the food and particles left behind from cleaning. You should change the filter once a month for best results.

Door Seal Leaking

If water is leaking onto the floor there is most likely a problem with the door seal. Open the door and check to see if the seal is damaged or worn out. Make sure the seal is clean and the door closes without any trouble. If there is a problem with the upper seal you can handle it yourself. However, the lower seal is more difficult and should be left to the professionals. If your dishwasher uses vinyl or rubber seals this could be a problem. As these seals age, they become brittle and easily break which causes the dishwasher not to close properly. Sometimes a rubber seal may also be pushed out of its alignment. However, you can always push it back into place. If the seal is damaged the only solution would be to replace it.

Align Dishwasher

Another reason why it may leak water is due to the alignment. If your dishwasher isn’t properly level it may not be able to close properly. Which means that water can rise up and potentially leak out the dishwasher door. All you need to do to fix this is to check the horizontal and vertical levels and adjust them accordingly.

Leaking Water Valve

One of the reasons why it leaks water could also be because it has overflowed. Which means that the water valve may be the problem. The water valve is what takes the water from your water line and puts it into the dishwasher. If this is the problem it is more than likely that the dishes are not getting cleaned either.

Defective Pump

A common problem for a leaking dishwasher is usually a defective pump. It could also be caused because of the pump seal. The pump is what circulates the water around the dishwasher. It is also the part that is used to drain the water. It is located at the bottom of the dishwasher. If you notice that the pump is somehow damaged or broken it needs to be replaced right away.

Damaged Hose Clamps

Your dishwasher could also be leaking through the hose clamps. This is what secures the drain hose and circulating hose to the dishwasher pump. If the clamps are loose or if there are cracks in the hoses could cause leaking. For the clamps, you could try tightening it up using a screwdriver. However, if that does not work it will need to be replaced. If there is a crack in the hose then it needs to be replaced right away. If you are not able to do it properly you may need to call appliance repair specialists.

There are many times when you won’t have an idea of what exactly is wrong or what you need to do. This is why for these times it is best that you call in an appliance repairman to have a look at it. However, if you have time you could always take a look at the common reasons you have a leaking dishwasher and fix it yourself saving you money.
